In Mississippi, we take our college football very seriously. We are the birthplace of Brett Favre (University of Southern Miss), and all the Manning’s (Ole Miss). It came as huge surprise when a few students created the idea to replace the politically incorrect mascot “Colonel Reb” with Admiral Ackbar. In case you are unfamiliar with the University of Mississippi, or “Ole Miss” as we call it, they are the Rebels. Who better to lead the Rebel football team than the leader of the Rebel Alliance?
Well, it does not matter anyway. Lucasfilm fired a torpedo into the exhaust of this idea even though it won a popular vote with the Ole Miss student body. ESPN does a great job telling the story in their latest commercial, below.
