We humans take great comfort in our spot at the top of the food chain, but sometimes it’s a healthy thing for us to get a lesson in humility. And there’s no better source for a good humility lesson than the Discovery Channel during Shark Week, which starts this coming Sunday night.

Yes, for the 23rd year, Discovery is making midsummer television exciting, fascinating and in all ways sharkier. You can read all about the programming on the official Shark Week website, where you can also see clips, read about sharks, play shark-related games and even turn a picture of yourself into a bizarre hybrid of shark and human. The week kicks off at 9PM Eastern/Pacific on Sunday with Ultimate Air Jaws, all about the amazing aerial attacks of great white sharks (see the above picture). That show is immediately followed by Into the Shark Bite, produced by the same folks who do Discovery’s Time Warp series, which uses high-definition, high-speed cameras to show how a shark bite works from closer-up than you can get without reducing your total number of limbs. And that’s just for starters.

This year Shark Week is being hosted by Craig Ferguson, geek king of late-night TV talk shows and friend to MythBusters. I can’t wait to see what kind of biting commentary he has to offer.
