May is National Bike Month, a month-long event targeted at getting people off their couches, from behind the wheels of their cars and off the subway and onto a couple of patches of rubber to enjoy the thrill and enjoyment of riding a bike as often as they can during the month (and hopefully longer).

Cycling isn’t just good for the environment, it’s good for you. And at a time when the weather across the country is practically begging you to spend as much time outdoors as possible, a bike ride is a nice way to enjoy the fresh air and sunshine of spring. Check the League of American Bicyclists for a list of events throughout the month, many happening in an area near you.

And it doesn’t matter if you have cracked rubber on your tires or a rusty chain stuck on the big ring, just ride. I often think of the quote from the great Belgian champion, Eddie Merckx who said “Don’t buy upgrades; ride up grades.” So whether you’re a kid learning with training wheels, a hipster on a fixie, or a spandex-clad saddle jockey, get on your bike and ride this May.
