You probably know that today is Cinco de Mayo, which can be a lot of fun to celebrate (even if it’s not Mexican Independence Day, as many think). While we at GeekDad enjoy Mexican food and margaritas as much as anyone else, we couldn’t help but notice that there’s another, much geekier, reason to celebrate today.
Today is May 5, 2010, and, written in popular shorthand for dates, that makes it 5/5/10 — and it doesn’t even matter if you write dates the American or European way. Since 5 + 5 = 10, we propose that today be known as Double Day. Unfortunately, it’s too late to celebrate the four Double Days already past this century, but if we get the ball rolling now we can celebrate today and the seven more yet to come.
So, spread the word! Remember to mark it on your calendars every twenty-five months and one day. And plan on having a really big celebration on December 12, 2024, because after that there won’t be another Double Day until the year 2102, and I doubt many of us will be around to see that.
