Tonight at 8:00pm Eastern, geek musician Storm (of the brilliantly funny Paul and Storm) will attempt to eat an entire Carvel “Fudgie the Whale” cake by himself, for charity, at the headquarters of ThinkGeek. What’s more, I — your friendly neighborhood Assistant Editor — will be on hand to help out. We understand if this sounds like an April Fools’ Day gag, but trust us, it’s true.
What started out as a fun promise Storm made Tuesday if the @paulandstorm Twitter account reached 10,000 followers has turned into a major event (and been moved to tonight). If you haven’t applied for tickets to watch in person, sadly there are none left; but you can watch the event as it’s livestreamed on Paul and Storm’s Ustream channel. I also plan to take some behind-the-scenes pictures which I will make public.
More importantly, you can participate by donating money, which will not only go to a very worthy cause but also will enter you in a drawing to win an awesome prize. 100% of all donations will go to help the Arlington (Virginia) Food Assistance Center (and, through a matching grant, each donation will be doubled), and every dollar you donate gets you another chance to win one of two $100 gift certificates to ThinkGeek! Winners won’t be selected until April 12th, so if you can’t give today, you’ve got a little time.
There will surely be some surprises that will make FudgieThon even more fun than it sounds like now. I’m not yet completely certain what my responsibilities will entail, but providing commentary and live-tweeting have been discussed. More details will be posted to Twitter during the day today by @paulandstorm, @thinkgeek, and our own @WiredGeekDad, so if you’re interested I recommend you follow all three.
Please consider donating, whether or not you choose to tune in to see Storm stuff his face with whale-shaped ice cream cake. But really, don’t you want to be able to tell your grandkids someday that you saw FudgieThon 2010 as it happened? I know I do!
