Free Comic Book Day is Saturday, May 1st

The first Saturday in May has been been circled on my calendar since 2002 – Free Comic Book Day is one of the happiest days of the year. It’s the perfect time to sample new comics from publishers of all sizes at your friendly local comics shop, share the hobby with friends and family, and maybe browse the trade paperback shelves and take a chance on something new.

I’ve brought my son and daughter along for the last three years, and have turned the event into a scavenger hunt. First, I print out a copy of the available comics from the FCBD site and have them pick their favorites. Then, we look for another book on the shelves featuring the same characters.

This year, the comics that catch my eye include the new Doctor Solar/Magnus flip book from Jim Shooter and Dark Horse, War of the Supermen , Owly and Friends, and Library of American Comics , but the real fun will be seeing what the kids pick. I have a feeling that Iron Man, Toy Story, and DC Kids will be their first choices, but they’re always full of surprises (I’ll probably draw the line at Irredeemable/Incorruptible, no matter how much I love that book).

I think this promo postcard by Sergio Aragones captures the spirit of the day:
