I loved building, racing and customizing R/C cars when I was younger. More recently I’ve returned to my hobby with the intention of introducing my kids to it. They seem to have enjoyed it so far, but what I wasn’t expecting was that it also rekindled a passion for the hobby in me as well.
I recently took a step up from Tamiya cars to a Sprint 2 Flux from HPI. This not only nudges the build quality towards the racing end of the spectrum but was also my first taste of Brushless powered racing. This piece of kit really got my geek juices flowing in this latest vehicle was the sheer amount of technology on board. Not only did it have a LiPo battery that needed a small computer to charge it, but also had a head-synced electronic speed controller and brushless motor.
The end result of all this technology is a car that goes shockingly fast. As I flesh out in my r/c review, I was simply not prepared for an electric R/C car to move this quick. It’s also so quiet – particularly compared to its nitro counter parts.
The challenge now is to find a space big enough to let the kids get their hands on the control without causing me heart failure. This weekend we will be taking it down to the biggest car park near us (early in the morning before the shoppers arrive) to see how far we can get it to jump.
The challenge now is to find someone else to race against, and then a track that can accommodate these super-fast hi-tech r/c cars.
