My older son (he’s 11) is a fan of Duff Goldman and Ace of Cakes. You might remember a couple years ago when he (my son, not Duff) built his 4th grade California Mission project as a cake. Well, he got it in his head to repeat the experience, but this time for something much more geeky.

His class has to read a book a month, each from a difference genre. January came up Fantasy, and he dug into The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien (I was so proud). Then he decided that instead of a straight book report, he’d make Bilbo‘s Hobbit hole, Bag End, as a cake.

Construction includes five layers of white cake for the hill and ground, all covered in a layer of fondant. The grass is crushed Rice Krispies stuck on with a layer of frosting, and then colored with an aerosol food coloring. The path, garden (including cabbages), flowers, door and window are all colored fondant. The rocks on the side of the walkway, and the chimney on top, are all small candies made to look like pebbles.

No word on his grade yet. And no, we don’t plan on eating it (it’s a work of art!).
