GeekDad Puzzle Of The Week: Presidents Day Solution

Geek Culture

Congratulations to a most presidential Bob Solorio, who correctly deciphered this week’s puzzle and provided the correct answer to win a $50 gift certificate from the stunningly attractive folks at Think Geek.

Puzzle:

For a lot of people, Presidents Day means a day off and the chance to celebrate the accomplishments of our 44 presidents by taking advantage of a 12-hour sale at the shopping mall. For you, it means a little head-scratching to figure out this little deception.

Solution:

This is a simple substitution cypher. By identifying each of the presidents from his portrait and identifying which president he was, you could convert that president’s numeric rank to a letter (Washington = first president = 1 = A, etc.). Working through all the portraits we end up with the following question:

What comic is a favorite of both Obama and Reagan?

We’re halfway there. As widely reported leading up to the 2008 election, Obama is a fan of both Batman and Spider-Man. A little Googling turns up a Reagan interview on 60 Minutes where the Gipper says he starts everyday with Spider-Man, giving us the second piece of the puzzle. Congratulations to everyone who figured it out.

Be sure to look us up on Sunday when Dave Giancaspro concocts another conundrum to crunch your corpus callosum.
