G-Force: Guinea Pig Superheroes

Geek Culture

To me, there are two kinds of movies for children.

With the first kind, I happily sit down and watch with my kids, knowing I’ll be as entertained as they are. All the Pixar movies fall into the this category.

The second kind is the type that the kids love but hold no interest for me whatsoever. These include Garfield, and new Scooby-Do movies, and various Disney Channel productions.

G-Force is the second kind of movie.

It’s about superspy guinea pigs. They have miniature spy gadgets. They fight crime. Unfortunately for them, they’re fired from their jobs, so they have to make their way in the real world until they get a chance to save it again.

I received a review copy at the beginning of December and it was quickly put to use during a snow day where it was also too cold to go outside. Over the weekend, the 10-year-old twins watched it four times. (Not in a row, thankfully.) I’m sure they’ll pull it out again over February vacation.

They loved the guinea pigs, the jokes, and the physical comedy. Their favorite scene was, not surprisingly, the car chase.

The combo pack edition contains a Blu-Ray disc, a regular DVD, and a digital copy of the movie. However, the extras are all on the Blu-Ray discs. I suspect this is part of a trend and is meant to encourage purchases of Blu-Ray and HDTVs.

I’m resisting this so far because our regular DVD players still work fine and because I’m not willing to spend money to replace our perfectly good (though low-tech) televisions with HDTVs.

In the meantime, however, it looks like I may end up missing a lot of extras.
