You might say we had a Victor Wong double feature this weekend: in an attempt to bring our kids up as geeky as possible, we introduced them to both Tremors and Big Trouble in Little China. While I’d generally argue that Tremors is the better-made film overall (it was produced by Gale Anne Hurd, who also produced Terminator, Aliens, and The Abyss), the boys ended up picking BTiLC as their favorite. And really, I understand why. The movie is so much fun – it’s all tongue-in-cheek, but Kurt Russel delivers his over-the-top lines as Jack Burton with scene-chewing relish.
All of which got me to thinking: if there was ever a movie so beloved by geeks that could have a sequel made, cheaply, but which would bring a large and passionate geeky audience out of the woodwork to see it, this is the one. For more than 20 years, this has been the most fun group movie I know. Get a bunch of geeks together (perhaps with a few beers), and the MST3K-style riffing will have the walls shaking inside of ten minutes. And, save for the late, lamented, aforementioned Victor Wong, the rest of the actors are still around and working. Plus John Carpenter would probably love to have a bit of fun again.
