This past week, Valve added a new family genre to their Steam distribution service. They currently have about 200 family-friendly games in the newly developed category (although a fair number of these are also listed in the Casual genre). To kick of this new division, they have a good chunk of their family games for sale, at prices that are 20-50% off. Titles on sale include: CakeMania, Nancy Drew, Luxor 3, Seven Wonders 2, and many more.

The biggest advantage to the Windows-only Steam service is that you can install the game on as many computers as you want. While you can only play them on a single computer that is logged into the Steam service, the ability to have them installed on more than one machine is a huge advantage. It’s perfect for when I need one computer to run a specific app, but my geek daughter wants to play a game on another.

Plus, the games install in the background and are always kept up to date.
Oftentimes, demo versions of a game are available as well as gameplay video, so you can try before you buy, and the game’s Metacritic score is on hand to help you make informed buying choices.

Also, be sure to check out this list of free Steam games, including some family friendly hits.
