We just got back from Touch-A-Truck — a festival put on by a local county government that let kids touch trucks. Lots and lots of trucks and other big machines — dump trucks, cement trucks, bucket trucks, fire trucks, Army trucks, backhoes, buses, a wood chipper, a snow cat, a Brinks armored truck and on and on and on.
And by touch I mean climb on, climb in, fiddle the steering wheel, go up high in the bucket and, most noticeably, honk the horn. (Allowing kids to honk truck horns as often as they wish is a brave choice.)
The beauty of all this is that it was free for us and probably cost very little for the county to put on. Some of the trucks belonged to the county; others were owned by local businesses that seemed very happy to show them off. It was good for everybody, especially kids. And Geeks got a chance to check out motors, dials, switches, odd instructional labels and all that sort of thing.
Some local governments have been doing these events for years. Hopefully, Touch-A-Truck will come to a big field near you. Don’t miss it if it does.
