MySims Racing – So Broken, We Bought Two!

Geek Culture

msrmsrThis is one of those stories; one of those “why didn’t I do research on the internet first?” stories. As part of his present for getting out of the 4th grade intact and in good stead with his teachers, my younger son got to pick up a few new videogame titles to tide him over for the summer. One of the games he found was MySims Racing – a kart racing game with cartoony-sims elements.

He tried playing it, and it would lock up at the first save screen. It asked for him to push “A” on the wiimote, but wouldn’t take it and we couldn’t figure out why. We changed wiimotes, we replaced batteries, we reloaded and cleaned and cleared memory space, all to no avail. My wife gave up, and went back and picked up another copy. Oh, yeah, Target has a no-return policy on opened video games. 😛

Second disc, same problem. GeekDad finally goes on the internet.

Turns out there’s a little quirk to the game – not a bug! Call it a feature! If there’s a Game Cube or classic controller plugged into the Wii when the game starts up, it overrides the wiimote on this particular screen. I tapped “A” on the Cube controller that was, indeed, connected to our Wii, and the game started loading perfectly unaware of the extra money we’d blown on it.

Not cool, EA. Not cool.
