Geeky Embroidery

One nice thing about crafts is that they lend themselves well to customization. That’s kind of what they’re all about. Use your imaginative side to create something that fits your style and interests. You can do this with crochet (amigurumi anyone?), sewing (such as d20 purses) and even embroidery. Below are two excellent examples of expressing your geekiness through the art of embroidery, whether it be cross-stitch or freestyle. Neither one has a pattern available, but a little variation in the result is another way to personalize your crafts.

The first is an example of cross stitch containing a quote from your favorite musical and mine, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog. At first glance it has the style of an old fashioned embroidery piece, but obviously the quote gives it away. I’m hoping to learn embroidery along with my daughter this school year, so perhaps I can give it a try myself.

The second is a free-form and mind-blowing representation of the lunar surface. I’ve never seen so many French knots! It’s gorgeous and represents the color image very well. I am duly inspired. Beche-la-mer from Two Cents apparently made this two and a half years ago, but it’s especially appropriate considering the Apollo anniversary this week.
