Playing Board-Games for Charity

Geek Culture

This weekend there looks to be a great event for those living in the southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois region. Beyond that, it looks to be a great idea for other gaming fans no matter what your locale.

Saturday, April 25th and Sunday, April 26th, the 2009 Spring Gaming Hoopla is taking place in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. Two days, gaming tournaments and over two-hundred board games – all for the price of $10 for the entire weekend (or $7 for a day pass). It gets better, though, because all the proceeds are being donated to the American Cancer Society. The first Gaming Hoopla was held in September 2008 and more than $2,000 was raised. Hat-tip to loyal GeekDad reader (and 2008 Gaming Hoopla attendee) Chris D. for letting us know about this event.

The 2009 Gaming Hoopla is being held at the Lake Como Beach Clubhouse, W3730 Clubhouse Dr., Lake Geneva, WI 53147. On Saturday, the event will go from 8am until 10pm, and on Sunday, it will go from 8am until 4pm. Chris says it’s a very family-friendly time, and there is still time to sign up. Here is the list of events for the weekend along with the games available for raffle.

I really like the idea of bringing board-game fans together for a couple days of gaming and tournaments while helping out a charity at the same time. Just a few people can make a big difference, and this idea is easily portable across state and country lines – all it takes is a few dedicated individuals.

Are there other groups in different states or different parts of the world doing the same thing? Let us know in the comments.
