Sometimes the weird, WTF-inducing rumors turn out to be true.

As soon as LEGO Batman: The Videogame came out last year, lovers of the series started speculating about what the next title would be. In January the rumor started swirling about that an insider had revealed that it would be, of all things, LEGO Rock Band. I think most people—even those who love both LEGO and Rock Band—did a double-take at that news. Sometimes two great tastes just don’t taste great together, and it seemed odd that Traveller’s Tales would go that route. Because of that, I think most people simply dismissed it as nothing more than a rumor.

And yet it seems to be true. Yesterday the videogame blog Kotaku reported that a designer at Harmonix, the company that makes Rock Band, had accidentally left a slide in his presentation at GDC that revealed that LEGO Rock Band was not only real, but was going to be released this year! Since he didn’t intend to reveal the information, there are of course no more details available, but if the game is to be published this year surely an official announcement is forthcoming.

I’m very much hoping that it turns out better than I think it will. I can’t quite see how it will work—if it’s nothing more than a version of Rock Band with virtual minifigs instead of virtual humans, that hardly seems worth the (expected) price. And if it’s more like the previous LEGO videogame titles, it’s hard to see how it would successfully fit the Rock Band pieces into it. I mean, part of the fun of the LEGO videogames is running around destroying things for studs, and I don’t see how you fit rock stars into that kind of game.

Unless…that’s it! They could have the game take place in various hotel rooms!
