Back in January, a pair of Red-tailed hawks made their nest on a window ledge of the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia. Seeing a great opportunity, the staff there set up a webcam to view the birds as they raise their young. The hawks have laid 3 eggs (they usually lay between 2 and 4) and word is that they have just started to poke through their shells. Being a Philly native myself, there has been a noticeable uptick in the number of birds of prey being seen in the down town area. I’ve seen hawks raiding squirrels nests in Washington Square Park and eating pigeons near Carpenter’s Hall. It’s great to see more urban wildlife. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled. We should be seeing some hatchlings any time now.
