“The Streamy Awards” Want Your Vote – But There Is a Problem

The first annual "Streamy Awards" are going to be presented on March 28, 2009 in Los Angeles, and the award show sponsors are asking for your votes. "The Streamys" have been created to honor outstanding achievement in shows that were originally produced for broadband distribution. The problem I am having is that the nominated episodes are so good, I am having big problems choosing which one to vote for.

Eight videos have been nominated for the Audience Choice awards. The first one that immediately grabbed my notice was Tiki Bar TV. I have been following this show since it first appeared on iTunes back in 2005. Billing itself as an "original podcast from the 50′s," Tiki Bar features the adventures of Dr. Tiki, Lala and Johnny Johnny as they face all sorts of adversaries from a Soviet Ambassador to a malfunctioning robot bartender. Fortunately, most problems can be solved by one of the doctor’s cocktail prescriptions. This is by not means a family-friendly show nor is it recommended for those with an aversion to alcohol, but I like it a lot. Hey, don’t judge me!

The next three favorites of mine have three things in common: great writing, great performances and the appearance of a certain redhead. The Guild, written by and starring Felicia Day, depicts the misadventures of an online guild in a World of Warcraft-like online game. Its incredible popularity is rumored to have inspired Joss Whedon on my next choice, Doctor Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog. Starring Neil Patrick Harris, Nathan Fillion and, again, Felicia Day, Dr. Horrible helped set the benchmark for online content as a viable revenue source. And finally, The Legend of Neil, created and directed by The Guild co-star Sandeep Parikh with a guest appearance by, surprise, Felicia Day, follows the adventures of Neil as he is knocked unconscious and sucked into The Legend of Zelda video game. Again, none of these choices, especially the last, are particularly kid-friendly. But even GeekDads need a break the Jonas Brothers now and then.

The last four nominees in the Audience Choice category include my first hero, William Shatner in The Shatner Project, The Hayley Project, The Wingmen, Dorm Life and After Judgement. I am just beginning to follow these shows but if the nominated episodes are anything like their regular content, I will be watching them all regularly. All of these video episodes can be seen in their entirety at "The Streamys" website. You can vote for your favorite once per day, up until March 28th.
