GeekDad’s 2nd Anniversary – Dave Banks’ Story

Why I Joined GeekDad: My son and I had become obsessed with model rocketry and I was searching for information one afternoon when I came across a post on GeekDad. I really liked the content, but a lot of the stories seemed to be very San Francisco-centric. So I sent an e-mail to Chris Anderson, asking him if he would consider opening it up, geographically. I guess he agreed because, days later, Chris put the call out for volunteers to write for GeekDad. When I sent my initial e-mail, I hadn’t really intended to get involved. But the more I thought about it, the more fun I thought it could be. So I decided to put my money where my mouth was and apply. I wasn’t sure I would be selected, so I was pretty excited when I got the nod. I’m still very thankful. GeekDad is a wonderful experiment to be involved in.

My Favorite Post: I have a few I like a lot, but my favorite is probably the second one I ever did. Like our readers, I really like the posts having to do with projects and this one was one I had just finished: Turning a Photograph Into Wallpaper. Sentimentally, it’s a favorite because my son tells me – almost monthly – that he loves his wallpaper. But I also enjoy the fact that I still get e-mails from readers looking to replicate the project in their homes, asking for help and suggestions.

And While I Have You Here: I think we’re very fortunate to have contributors with such a wide variety of interests. GeekDad is still one of my favorite sites to read and my fellow contributors are the main reason why. I’m glad I didn’t have to pick a favorite post from them – I’d have been hard pressed to decide.

I’m also very appreciative of our readers. We’ve experienced huge growth in the past year and it’s due to you that it has happened so quickly. You’re a very intelligent bunch and thank you for setting us straight when we make mistakes and also for all your suggestions and comments that help to move the conversations along.

Finally, I want to encourage everyone to give a big thanks to our editor, Ken Denmead. Ken works tirelessly to make sure GeekDad is full of content every day and to promote the site so we get more and better exposure. Most of Ken’s work is behind the scenes, but the testament to his ability and professionalism is how seamless he makes this whole thing seem. Thanks, Ken! : )
