The Great Backyard Bird Count

Geek Culture

BirdcountBirdcount
Another count for your family to participate in. (Don’t you know I missed the star count after posting it?) The Great Backyard Bird Count began Friday and continues until Monday. Bird watchers of all ages, from beginning bird watchers to experts, are invited to count birds to create a real-time snapshot of where the birds are across the continent. It takes as little as 15 minutes on one day, or you can count for as long as you like each day of the event.

The site, sponsored by Cornell University in my home state of NY, has lots of information to help you identify the birds you see. It also talks about binoculars, bird feeders and other bird-lover paraphernalia. You can even participate in their annual photo contest by uploading your jpgs to their gallery.

The weather forecast looks great, so I’ll make sure we head out with the camera and scout some birds. As the site says, it’s free, fun, and easy—and it helps the birds.
