The New York International Children’s Film Festival, the largest festival for children and teens in North America, starts today and runs through March 15. According to the Daily News, the festival is a showcase for films that are both critically acclaimed and loved by audiences, but for whatever reason Hollywood can’t figure out what to do with. Typical of the kind of independent, experimental films shown is Battle For Terra, a film described as "Wall-E meets Star Wars," about a race of peaceful tadpole-like creatures who are invaded by refugee aliens from Earth.

Screenings at the NYICFF traditionally sell out in advance, but you can watch a large selection of children’s shorts (including a 7-minute animation by the maker of Terra called The Freak), all with suggested age ranges, at the related website gkids.tv.
