The Jedi Academy has begun training five new younglings: Aon, Box,
Cud, Dex, and Ed. Their first task as new padawan learners is to decide who is to begin exclusive training in light-saber, record keeping, force choking, mental manipulation, and meditation.

Naturally, they all had very strong opinions about this. Empathetic
Aon was convinced that whoever was to learn record keeping, it should not be Ed. Cud was very keen to learn force choking, but Ed thought that Dex was the most suitable for this training. Box hoped that Aon would be the one to learn meditation and expressed a strong disinclination for himself to learn mental manipulation. Dex happily recommended Box for light saber training.

After the assignments had been made, Master Yoda was interested to see that the hopes and recommendations of the force choking trainee and meditation initiate had not in fact been fulfilled, but that those of light saber learner and record keeping student had.

Who had which training assignment?

Solution

List each padawan’s wishes:

Aon: E not RK
Box: 1) A for M; 2) Not B for MM
Cud: D for FC
Dex: B for LS
Ed: D for FC

Consider the force choking trainee and the meditation initiate wishes as false, and the others as true. Determine who is who to find which statements are accurate.

If C is true, then it is also contradictory and cannot be true (because the FC wishes are false); C is not FC and not LS nor RK (because these would be true).

If D is true, then B1 and B2 are true, but then A is not true. Then E is RK and true, and D is FC and not true. But this is contradictory, so D is not true and B is not LS and D is not LS nor RK.

If A is LS, then E is not RK (because A would be true). Therefore B is RK because no one else can be. B1 and B2 are true and A is M. But again this does not work so A is not LS and E is LS by elimination. E is therefore true and D is FC.

Since E is not RK, A is true and A is not M. B1 is not true so B is not RK and A is RK by elimination.

If B2 is true then B is not MM and B is M. But M’s statements are false so B2 is false.  But this is contrary. If B2 is false then B is MM and C must be M.

Therefore, the final training assignments are:

Aon: Record Keeping
Box: Mental Manipulation
Cud: Meditation
Dex: Force Choking
Ed: Light Saber
