A Bruce Campbell-less Bubba Nosferatu? Say It Ain’t So!

Bubba Ho-Tep was a work of genius—weird genius, to be sure, but genius nonetheless. If you haven’t seen it, you should, but suffice it to say that it’s about Elvis and JFK, who are still alive and living in a nursing home, battling an Egyptian mummy. Really it’s not JFK, which is pretty obvious since he’s played by Ossie Davis, but it is really Elvis, and he is played as only Bruce Campbell could. If you don’t know who Bruce Campbell is, I will resist questioning your geek credentials, but you should rectify the situation as soon as possible.

Anyway, it’s a great movie, and so I was pretty excited to hear they were going to make a sequel, called Bubba Nosferatu—mummy to vampire seemed like a logical progression. But then came a rumor that Bruce Campbell was not going to be in it, and then Campbell himself confirmed it. So I figured that was the end of the movie, because I couldn’t see anyone replacing him. But I was wrong: they’ve announced that Ron Perlman is going to play Elvis.

This is just so very wrong. Perlman’s a great actor in the right role, but this is most definitely not it. Sometimes an actor or actress is just essential to a movie, and without him or her the movie just can’t happen. This is one of those cases, and I hope the producers recognize this before they put real money into it.
