The Hong Kong Lego User’s Group has put together an absolutely incredible brick recreation of the 2008 Beijing Olympic venues. Using 300,000 bricks and 4,500 minifigs spread over a 24 square meter tableau, the group constructed all the Games’ iconic structures — the National Swimming Centre (the Swimming Cube), the Bird’s Nest arena, the equestrian grounds, the sports and residential villages. The group’s blog doesn’t discuss the amoutn of time it took to construct something with this level of detail. I can only imagine it was hundreds of hours, and the sheer artistry of the construction is astounding — the stormtrooper relaxing in the Parthenon notwithstanding.
The project is on display until the end of this month at the Grand Century Palace in Kowloon, Hong Kong, and has been viewed by at least 43,000 visitors so far. The HKLUG’s Brickshelf project gallery is huge, and contains a slew in wonderful photos of the project, all the way down to macro shots. A Webshots user named windmas2006 has another gallery of his own photos of the project.
The HKLUG uses the tagline "Play Well, Play Pro" — a goal they’ve definitely achieved with this project. A worthwhile way to entertain yourself during Bob Costas’ blathering sessions.
