I am on a constant search for books that I can read to my kids while enjoying myself. My 9 year old son and I are currently working our way through The Ranger’s Apprentice series, by John Flanagan, which I can recommend wholeheartedly. The series is set in a mythical world of medieval England. The Rangers of the title are like a cross between Navy Seals and MacGyver. They are constantly saving the Kingdom from evildoers with their wits, archery skills and arcane knowledge.
These books have enough swordplay and intrigue for my son, while the quality of the writing keeps me looking forward to bedtime. The first book, The Ruins of Gorlan (The Ranger’s Apprentice, Book 1) will hook you with how the hero, Will, an orphan and castle ward, is chosen for Ranger training by the mysterious Ranger Halt.
