Mentos + Diet Coke + Belgians = Medieval Science Ritual!

Internet

There probably isn’t a geekdad out there who hasn’t blown a few bucks on some Mentos and dowsed their kid with Diet Coke. My own attempts have involved an array of PVC pipe, grey tape, and a recycling bin full of plastic bottles.

So it becomes a natural evolution when you’re a Belgian college student to gather with 1,499 of your friends in Place Ladeuzeplein in Leuven with your own bottle of DC and stack of Mentos for a simultaneous tribute to nucleation. Behold the world record group Mentos/Coke geyser.

Leuven is quite nice (if not now a bit sticky). In addition to being a quaint college town, it still maintains much of its medieval and Baroque character. The building in the back is the Town Hall which contains hundreds of small statues of various historical and religious figures–all keeping watch over the shenanigans.

The whole thing is like medieval monks gathering for some strange ritual. Hail chemie!
