What Will You Be Giving Over the Holidays?

Geek Culture

Giving_treeGiving_treeIt’s easy to get caught up in the craziness of the holidays — especially with sales starting in late October. With top 10 gadget lists and "best of 2007" offerings; mail-in rebates and offers of free shipping, it’s enough to make anyone go mad with desire.

But the end of the year is also a great time to remember those less fortunate than us. Volunteering and philanthropy are strongly emphasized in our household. We’re active year-round in various charities and social causes … but the holidays are a special time for helping.

There are so many opportunities: whether its dropping some change in a Salvation Army kettle or serving on the food line at the local shelter. Alternately, you can put your job or hobby skills to use for an organization that needs specialized assistance or just get out your checkbook.

This year, my family will be donating time and money to several good causes: the Wounded Warrior Project, Penny Arcade’s Child’s Play, and Doctors Without Borders – along with the local organizations we are involved with.

What about you? Any great ideas for helping out during the holidays? Or maybe you’ve started your own fundraiser?
