Geeky States of America: Viva Florida 500

How many of you knew that Juan Ponce de León first landed on the east coast of the United States on April 2-3, 1513? How many of you knew that it was he and his crew who first called the large peninsula on which they landed La Florida, giving props to the Easter season and the beautiful landscape surrounding them. So if you do your math correctly, that would mean today is the 500th anniversary of Ponce de León’s landing. The state of Florida is celebrating this anniversary in style, with commemorations and celebrations throughout the state, throughout the year 2013.

Vulcan Events — Away Mission Orlando 2012: Mission Complete

Vulcan Events — Away Mission Orlando 2012 was another great time spent with friends and spreading the good word of the dark and light sides of the force. Avery Brooks was the headliner for the event and while I’m a fan of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, my excitement was in getting to meet Robert Duncan McNeill (Tom Paris, Star Trek: Voyager and getting a picture of Dirk Benedict (Starbuck, Battlestar Galactica) for my mom.

Don’t Touch His “Ducks” — An Autistic Boy’s Fight to Keep his Pets

Hey! City of DeBary, Florida…Don’t touch J.J Hart’s ducks! The “ducks” in question are actually chickens that J.J’s family purchased to help supply his diet with fresh eggs. Over time, a wonderful thing happened. J.J developed a connection with the chickens and now affectionately calls them his “ducks”. You see, two-year old J.J has autism spectrum disorder; a complex disorder of the brain that causes a some children to have difficulty with communication, behavior and social interaction. The chickens are therapeutic for J.J and are helping him overcome some of his autistic traits including some of his communication hurdles.
