The latest round of posters and promotional images for ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ have been released, and as usual, the question I’m asked whenever Hawkeye shows up is “what about the archery?” So let’s take a look. Continue reading

Impressive Archer Shows Real Skills

YouTube channel Smarter Every Day has posted a video of Alabama archer Byron Ferguson demonstrating his skills. In contrast to some other archers, he doesn’t spend any time making grandiose claims about his own skills or offering insulting assertions about modern target archers; he just steps up and shows what good instinctive archery looks like. It’s Not Hawkeye’s Fault!

Jeremy Renner watches Joss Whedon attempt interpretive dance.

Hawkeye’s bad archery is not Jeremy Renner’s fault. The latest photos from the set show director Joss Whedon demonstrating an alleged “archery pose” for actor Jermey Renner, and suddenly it all becomes clear; Renner’s archery mistakes in the first film can be laid squarely at Joss Whedon’s door. “Hawkeye, World’s Worst Archer” – The Rest of the Story

MARVEL'S THE AVENGERS

Back in March of 2012, when GeekDad was still part of Wired, I wrote an article about Hawkeye’s actual archery ability as seen in the trailers and publicity photos for the Avengers. The article got a lot of page-views, and I heard from some readers; I got some nice emails from people who liked it, a few from people who wanted to argue some of my points, and one hilarious message full of invective and profanity from somebody who was outraged that I would malign his favorite superhero. Recently I got an email from somebody who read it and had a different reaction. Since it is the nicest response I’ve ever received from anything I’ve ever written, I thought I would share it with you (with the author’s permission, of course). Continue reading

As an archery instructor, I am often asked about archery safety, usually by parents whose children have expressed interest in the sport. After the release of The Hunger Games and Brave, the popularity of archery soared, particularly among girls and women. Continue reading

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug – Tauriel the Elven Archer

Evangeline-lily-hobbit

Ever since I wrote those articles about the archery in Brave, The Hunger Games and Avengers , I get random email, Twitter and Facebook messages from people pointing out archery in other movies, TV shows, comics, cartoons and videogames and asking what I think, and the latest to cross my screen is a note inquiring about the new elf character played by Evangeline Lily in the second installment of the Hobbit saga. Continue reading

GeekDad Puzzle of the Week Answer: That Darn Achilles

This week’s puzzle asked how to shoot an arrow as far as possible from the walls of Troy. Ah yeah, projectile motion, baby! (Or as Laurion wrote, “Oooh, trajectory calculations!” Thank you, Laurion….me too!) And if you ever took physics … Continue reading

The Avengers’ Hawkeye: Not Such a Bad Archer After All (GeekDad Weekly Rewind)

I got to see a preview screening of The Avengers last night, and I need to amend my earlier comments regarding Hawkeye’s archery technique a little bit. I can’t give you a review of the film, at least not yet, … Continue reading
