With just over a week until Chanukah, the Manischewitz annual cookie house contest is underway, starting today! This year, the Grand Prize Winner will receive $2,000, Second Prize wins $1,000, and Third Prize receives $500! There are very few limits in the contest, and creative additions are greatly encouraged. Not only can you enter the contest by building one of these houses, GeekDad is giving away a Manischewitz® Chanukah House kit to a lucky GeekDad entrant!
Our family got the chance to build a Chanukah House, and it was great fun. Mostly, it was what you can expect from a dessert house building kit. A couple of slightly broken cookies, candies and sprinkles, and an excessive amount of icing, inviting you into a sugar-fueled coma.
The kids and I whacked away at it, gluing the broken pieces together, and decorating the individual pieces. I was greatly relieved to find that the icing was nicely stiff and sticky, allowing for reconstruction of the broken cookies, and easy assembly. Once we got all the pieces together, it looked like we were in the clear. For about ten seconds. One of the roof pieces (which you can see sagging in the photos) split in half, bringing the house down with it.
It was fun, but I have to say, building a home to enter into the competition will take more than the kit alone. Grab some other baking goods, and sink your teeth into a fun competition for the whole family.
