Wear Your Old Band T-Shirt to Work Day VI #tshirtday or #6MusicTShirtDay

This Friday, BBC6 Music wants you to dig up an old band t-shirt and wear it to work to show your support for good music.

I, for one, think that’s a great idea: wear your band t-shirt Friday, take a selfie, and send pictures to the 6 Music website and/or via Twitter and Facebook with the hashtag #tshirtday, and they will be rewarded for their efforts by receiving one specially designed 6 Music t-shirt as a mark of our appreciation for their support. We’re asking GeekDad readers to do that, but then also post their T-shirts to our Flickr page, and we’ll show the results here in a live feed (more on that Friday).

But, here, listen to event organizer, 6 Music DJ Steve Lamacq, explain T-shirt day in his own words:

It’s a small thing, but it lets the world know that it’s not just teens that listen to the Ramones, Sex Pistols, Led Zepplin, and the like. Music is a part of all of our culture, and I’m continually amazed that kids today still listen to music that was old when I was their age. But I’m also overjoyed that they reinvent that music with their own bands like Fall Out Boy, Panic At the Disco, and Arcade Fire to name a very few.

How do I participate?

  1. Wear your Band T-shirt to work on Friday.
  2. Take a picture of yourself wearing said t-shirt.
  3. Post picture online:
    1. Post on BBC6 Music Site: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b03j0z3j/live
    2. Post on BBC 6 Music Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BBCRadio6Music
    3. Post on Twitter with hashtag #tshirtday
    4. Post on GeekDad Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/groups/633614@N25/
  4. Sit back and bask in your smug superiority over lesser mortals (optional).

What if I don’t have/can’t find an old band T-shirt?

There are actually a lot of places in the malls and shopping centers where you can find new band t-shirts and even new t-shirts that look old. Try Urban OutfittersHot TopicSpencer Gifts, or your local head shop, and you may be surprised to find t-shirts for the groups you listened to years ago.

What is BBC6 Music?

Simply put, it is the BBC’s “alternative” radio station. But listening to “6 Music”—as they prefer to be called—is like taking a masters program in the great music of the last 50 years. I’ve been a fan for over ten years, listening to it almost daily. That said, I can only listen to it a bit at a time. After a few hours, I have so many great songs I’ve never heard or haven’t heard in years that my Spotify and iTunes playlists are full. The only rule for a song being on 6 Music is that it’s a good song, so they will play almost any genre. Not every song is for everyone, but listen for just a little while and you will find something you love.
