Commercial spaceflight just took another huge step closer to reality! Earlier this morning, Virgin Galactic completed a successful test flight of their SpaceShipTwo rocket-plane. Check out the video:

The full details on the test flight are over at Virgin’s site. The short version is that SS2 was carried up to 47,000 feet by the WhiteKnightTwo aircraft, at which point it was released. The SS2 rocket engine was ignited for the first time in flight, propelling the craft up to 55,000 feet at Mach 1.2.

With this success achieved, Virgin Galactic’s goal of a full space flight by the end of 2013 seems certain.

Now, if only I had $200k to spare for the price of a ticket…
